Created specifically for the exhibition, the five new works introduced an artistic approach that has since become the foundation of Spector's practice. Drawing from cinematic imagery, typography, color, composition, and narrative fragments, the works transform familiar elements of film into deeply personal visual narratives. Removed from their original context and reassembled through layering, juxtaposition, and reduction, these cinematic artifacts become vehicles for exploring memory, identity, longing, and autobiography.
More than a return to exhibiting, In the Presence Of represents the moment Spector discovered the artistic vocabulary that would define the next phase of his career. By treating cinema as his palette rather than his subject, he began creating works that blur the boundaries between film, personal history, and contemporary art, establishing a practice that continues to evolve through an ongoing exploration of storytelling, appropriation, and emotional memory.
In the Presence Of marked Neal Spector's return to exhibiting artwork after a sixteen-year hiatus.
During his years away from the gallery world, Spector built a distinguished career in Hollywood, leading creative advertising agencies specializing in film and television. For nearly three decades, he developed campaigns for many of the world's leading studios, becoming immersed in the language of cinema and the art of visual storytelling. Throughout those years, his lifelong fascination with film never faded. A self-described cinephile, movies remained the creative force that continually shaped the way he viewed the world.
When invited to participate in In the Presence Of at Earl Gallery in Los Angeles, Spector recognized the exhibition as an opportunity to begin a new chapter in his artistic practice. Rather than returning to previous bodies of work, he chose to embrace the visual language he knew most intimately—cinema.
